The Day You Gave Us, God, Is Ended ================================== w&m: John Ellerton, 1870 [Verse 1] The day you gave us, God, is ended, the light now fades at your request; To you our morning hymns ascended, your praise shall sanctify our rest. [Verse 2] We thank you that your Church, unsleeping while earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world its watch is keeping, and rests not now by day or night. [Verse 3] As o'er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day, The voice of pray'r is never silent, nor dies the strain of praise away. [Verse 4] The sun that bids us rest is waking our fam'ly members far away, Who, while we sleep, are gladly taking their turn to worship you and pray. [Verse 5] So be it, God, Your reign shall never, like earth's proud empires, fade and fall. Your reign endures, and grows forever till all your creatures heed your call.
